THE JADE BAR SHALOM BOOKS FOR ISRAEL PROJECT

The Jade Bar Shalom Books for Israel Project is an international grassroots effort to bring gently used good quality English books to school libraries in Israel.

COLLECTING AND SENDING THE BOOKS
Book Drive Organizers collect books for recipient schools in Israel, and then bring or ship the books over. The "Books for Israel" project connects donors directly to a school, teachers and the students so that both the donor and recipient communities can develop close, friendly relations. Anyone can participate - synagogues, churches, day schools, Hebrew schools, community centers and individuals. This is a great project for a Bar or Bat Mitzvah to learn about leadership and participate in a true hands-on Mitzvah project. All books are greatly appreciated, and well used. Please click on our links to learn more of how our project is run, and read about the people who have participated until now.

RECEIVING AND USING THE BOOKS
Teachers and Schools: Our website includes information on how to use the books and how to apply for your school library to be included in the Books for Israel project. There are lots of tips written by teachers in the field about how books written for English speakers can be integrated into all aspects of foreign-language teaching. There is also a comprehensive list of links to the teaching of extensive reading and literacy. Inservice training sessions (hishtalmuyot) are held regularly at ETAI conferences and organized by English inspectors: details are included in this section.

INITIATORS OF THE PROJECT
The Books for Israel Project was initiated in October 2002 by two sisters, Rena Cohen and Jade Bar Shalom, and Jade's husband, Ilan. While Rena organized book drives in the United States, Jade and Ilan organized teachers in Israel to distribute the books. We mourn the loss of Jade Bar Shalom, z"l, who died of brain cancer in August 2006. It is in her memory that Books for Israel will continue to spread the love and sharing of literature to the children in Israel.
